What Impact has Documentaries had on you and your lifestyle? personally for me I haven't viewed many documentaries and its not because I don't have the time or know any, but its more of because I really feel I don't get too much out of a film that's not a narrative driven plot. Just because I haven't seen many doesn't mean that I don't have one that notably stands out to me. One documentary that I saw was titled "The World's Fastest Man" which was a documentary on Usain Bolt which is the world record holder in the 100 meter and 200 meter dash. Of the few documentaries I have given a try, I would have to say this one is my favorite.
Documentaries can help a writer by giving them a more broad explanation of today's problems and how certain people deal with them. I think something that's really important to the writer and everyone else is to know that all people are human and nobody is perfect. In the documentaries I've seen, they try to bring these idol like people down to earth to show that they are just human and just like us they bleed the same. I feel that when we know that everyone goes through something I think this can make it easier to connect with other people.
In theory I honestly feel documentary films for the most part help bring everyone down to common grounds that define us as all having the same mutual problems whether it be a global catastrophe or a commonly diagnosed illness. In shaping a writer it's important to be considerate of other people's issues because these are the people who are going to be your supports in the long run. when a writer figures out how to connect to a group of people effectively, I feel they will become an effective writer.
Shabari,
ReplyDeleteI have read everyones blogs (well those who have posted as of today) and you're the only one that brought up that documentaries can show that we are all human, no one is perfect, and we all "bleed the same". I thought that was a very interesting outlook to have. I like how you mentioned that we all share issues (whether they be "global catastrophes or commonly diagnosed illnesses"). You're right, successful documentaries need to be able to effectively tug on the heart strings, influence, or "connect" with a large amount of people in order to be successful. This is definitely the case with writing too.
I agree with your last point. Definitely, one of the most important, if not the most important part about writing is connecting with your audience/readers. I think after reading some posts and reflecting about documentaries, I believe they are powerful because it is easier to catch someone's attention with images. I believe that to be one of our goals as we write. Painting a picture of the topic we are talking about.

ReplyDeleteThe media will always focus on the important or exciting parts of people's lives, which often give a misguided view of what their lives actually are. I think you illustrate that problem perfectly here, as documentaries show the struggles people go through, the more mundane and simple parts, and over just says "hey, he/she is human" just like you or me. In my opinion- that is the mark of a great documentary, one that shows the highs and the lows of a person's life.
